"Racism is takin' me home..."
You know, I'm not so sure about this whole Pim Fortyun thing. Agreed that he was gay (and "cool" because of it? nah, I think its more deep rooted than that), and conservative, and somehow his policies rang a bell with the Dutch people. But just because it rang true with the Dutch people doesn't mean that it was a good thing. Dave points out the following three threads on Adam Curry and other's blogs addressing this issue:
Here's my take on this...
Its really not news to me that someone with policies with racial under/over tones is popular with the Dutch people. Dutch are "tolerant" but tolerant of what? I mean the last openly racist government on Earth had a heavy dutch influence. I find it hard to believe that there are not cultural "call backs" to racism in the contemporary Dutch culture. Unfortunately, not having known the history of Pim's politics, I can't really make comments that are anything
but general, but looking at the bigger picture, I don't think Pim was anything revolutionary, he was just another politician catalyzing the ideas that are already cooking in the heads of many Dutch citizens.
The problems he addressed are the ones facing Imperial europe, and now the people have started to say, enough is enough, we don't owe anything to the people that we exploited to get where we are today. So let's clamp down on immigration, multiculturalism blah blah blah because its taking our identity down into the gutter. Well, that is just my generalized view of things, but really, its hard to miss the racism inherent in european (north european) politics. The superiority complex penetrates the modern Western world! period!
When some guy comes on stage and starts formulating it, some people get upset, because they don't think of themselves as racist bigots, but that may be the actual situation. American brand of political correctness applied to this only makes the picture more grotesque. I don't necessarily agree that Pim was wrong, he was correct in his social framework. The social framework that supports such ventures maybe racist, but in context, he was fine, and that's why he enjoyed the popularity!
I read the same racist thinking in the pro/con arguments regarding the Pim debate.
Europe is racist, and Europe is in power - the dominant culture - and Europe gets what europe wants (at least for now).
