Our Cats: Lydia and Daniel Striped Tiger
If you came here looking for the legacy Daniel is named after, look to the PBS site here. Lydia's name stuck when humming "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." revisited in one of my favorite films "The Fisher King."
Lydia is Tam's lap cat while Daniel is the boy's animated stuff animal and has the mouser instinct we wanted from Lydia. They are excellent companions to us and each other.

The Pushcart War, 2K lb. Goldfish
I highly recommend The Pushcart War. I thoroughly enjoyed it at a young age, and recalled and realized it's impact on my outlook as I mature. Vonnegut can teach you courtesy while entertaining you, and so will this book...it's also more appropriate for children.
If you need lighter reading The Two-Thousand-Pound Goldfish is just a fun book.
