I thought Java was dead on the desktop (for non-enterprise software) after Microsoft had to stop using it, but it sounds like OS X is giving it a new lease of life [zopenx.net].

Now all we need is a good way to make these Swing-based OS X Java apps run quickly on Windows and with a nice native UI look and feel (like on OS X)!

Excelsior's JET can compile Java code to small(ish) native runtimes on Windows, and it support's IBM's SWT GUI, which is fast and looks native. Does SWT work on the Mac?
