via SDMagazine.com: Whether you call it Bootstrapping or Zen Development every smart web developer should utilize the tools available to them to develop solutions. Reitano and Wayne illustrate the need to look for what is available before "re-inventing the wheel". Here is an excerpt:

"What makes it hard for us to see solutions that already exist? Speaking from bitter experience, I know that I find it uniquely satisfying to craft clever coding solutions to problems. In fact, I suspect it is just this satisfaction that drives most developers to show up at work each day. Here's the rub: When I'm in "detail solution mode," I instinctively tune out other people's solutions. I'm on the hunt, seeking the glory of the kill all for myself. A colleague suggested to me that the high proportion of males (read hunters) in our field may have something to do with our propensity to "go out and kill dinner" when we're hungry. Perhaps we could use a few more gatherers; the types who are more disposed to just remember where they saw those ripening blackberries last week, and stroll out to collect them. Guess who comes home with bruises, broken bones and great tales of derring-do and who comes home with dinner?"

Are you a hunter or gatherer?
