Read the Linux IPChains HowTo and now I feel primed to set up my server to only allow connections from work. The mail log shows various attempts to get in which make me feel paranoid. I will wait till I get lots of spam before I worry about a local spam filter.

I've been looking into RSS aggregators and I have installed peerkat. I chose it mainly because it is python and not a perl hack but:

  • it has not been updated since 2001

  • no obvious way to run it as a daemon

I like the principle so I will investigate this further. I may bite the bullet and go twisted as it can do all this and more. What I don't like about twisted is:

  • it looks like a big hack

  • not worderful documentation

  • liable to change

  • event driven programming: state machines are a pain, give me threads and linear programming

Something else to investigate is changing my hosting to linuxed based:

  • cheaper

  • access control

  • not sure if I get a login account rather than just hosting.

The downside is that I cannot test ASP. The project that required that is not going anywhere.

I've cut down on my caffeine intake and I feel much more lively. Starbucks decaf latte is quite palatable.
