I'm not risking anything, I'm reinstalling Windows XP on drive C. I've pulled the USB->flash card adapter that caused the problem.

New disk runs in Ultra DMA mode 5 which is different to the old disk. I will be VERY happy if it fixes my lockup problem but I am not optimistic.

Phew, got photo's back.

Phew, got photo's back. Writing them to 2 CD's right now.

New hard disk is a Western Digital Caviar WD800, 80G, 7200 rpm. Seems 0K so far. I have a feeling that windows may boot very quickly but at the moment it is more concerned with chkdsking the flaky drive.

One possible problem: Windows has installed itself as drive H with no drive C. Is that going to break every piece of software in the world or what?

Was waiting for a shoe repair, looking round and..

Was waiting for a shoe repair, looking round and saw a keyring that had a blank the size of a £ coin to use as the deposit for a shopping trolley. 'Never be without a pound' it said. I bought one for the gym locker, perfect to hang on the gym bag. If it works I'll buy the wife one. When I give her a pound she never gives it back.

It cost a pound. If it does not work I could drill a hole in a real pound and use that.

Chkdsk had finished by the time I got home.

Chkdsk had finished by the time I got home. There was a lost and found directory with the pictures underneath. I found them using the recovery console. They had odd permissions and I couldn't CD into the directories.

I put the disk in another computer here that runs an old version of linux (SUSE 7.1). It could not handle version 5 of NTFS and would not show the hidden files.

New disk today, I'm not going to risk using the old one again. In case it was a virus I won't execute anything from the old disk.
