So, that's how long it took to lock up. I was listening to an MP3 which may have exacerbated problems.
Replaced UDMA66 cable with normal IDE cable. System still shows device in Multi-word DMA mode 2. No other option except PIO. I'll wait and see.

I've had DMA disabled for a week or so with no lockups. I've enabled it again. I'd like to slow it down from balls-out mode but windows won't let me.

New version of keyboard software did not work so.. |

New version of keyboard software did not work so hacked it by using the 'launch program' option. Not ideal as it creates a new window rather than a new tab.
Now reinstalling RealOne player as

Installed keyboard drivers, awaiting another.. |

Installed keyboard drivers, awaiting another reboot. Setup program was keen to install logitech messenger to send me spam and to sign me up to various online services. It even showed me an advert for BT broadband and offerred to put a shortcut on my desktop. Cheek.
Feel of keyboard is ok but it doesn't click so it seems quiet.
Web shortcut buttons do not work so installing latest setup program.

Dongle did hotsync ok. Installed fairly smoothly.
Range seems poor, worse than other dongle. This one won't sync from bed :-( Can sync from toilet. Palm gives erroneous port in use error.

Windows update has installed some security update relating to data access. Waiting for reboot...
Dongle installed, not tried it yet. Have not installed keyboard drivers yet. Start button works.

Dongle was only £15 and I paid for the keyboard with gift vouchers. The keyboard seems well made for a modern keyboard. My old keyboard is about 15 years old so is very solid but also yellow, dirty and tatty. New keyboard has extra keys to save on mouse clicks. I'll keep you posted.
